Russell is a Local Area Coordinator with the Western Australian Disability Services Commission.  He is a committee member of the Bundigarra Aboriginal Community Corporation, MAMA Radio Station and ATLAS (Access to Leisure and Sport for People with Disabilities), and regularly works as a volunteer in his community.  Russell is a graduate of the Darwin Indigenous Leadership Program (2001) and holds a Bachelor of Social Science (Indigenous Community Development and Management) from Curtin University WA.

Russell's traditional land spans the Kimberley from Beagle Bay community near Broome to Warmun community in the East Kimberley.
