Professor Barlow is Foundation Professor of Horticulture and Viticulture at the of Melbourne. He is a plant physiologist and agricultural scientist with research interests in plant water use efficiency, viticulture and impacts of climate change on agriculture and water management.
He has a Bachelor and Masters degree in Rural Science (Hons) from New England and a PhD from Oregon University.
Professor Barlow has made a seminal contribution to national R& D policy and management through his membership of the biological sciences committee of the Australian Research Council (ARC) and the boards of both the Land and Water Resources and Rural Industries Research and Development Corporations. As President of the Australian Federation of Scientific and Technological Societies Snow was a member of the Prime Ministers Science Engineering and Innovation Council in 2003-2007.
He currently chairs the Expert Panel of the DAFF ‘Australia’s Future Farming ‘ climate change R & D program,is a member of the government NGO Roundtable on Climate Change and convenes the Primary Industries Research Adaptation Network of the National Climate Change Adaptation Research Facility.
Snow also chairs the Victorian Endowment for Science Knowledge and Innovation and serves on the board of the CRC for Irrigation Futures, the research advisory committee of the Australian Farm Institute and the science advisory panel of the Australian Science Media Centre.
Professor Barlow is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering , the Australian Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology and was recently awarded the ‘Australian Medal of Agricultural Science’.
Together with his partner Winsome McCaughey, he operates a commercial farm incorporating vineyards and farm forestry enterprises in the Strathbogie Ranges in North Eastern Victoria and markets wine under the Baddaginnie Run label.
